OOAK Jade with Carved Wooly Mammoth Ivory Tusk Pendant

Price: $435.00

This necklace is constructed of carved jade, faceted citrine nuggets and a carved Mammoth ivory pendant. Mammoth ivory is legal to sell - this ivory is a fossil found in the earth and no animals are killed to obtain the ivory. Mammoth ivory is found in Arctic regions such as Alaska, Canada and Siberia where the tusks have been preserved in the permafrost.

According to Wikipedia, the Wooly Mammoth entered North America about 100,000 years ago. The mammoth's habitat was the Mammoth Steppe which stretched across nothern Eurasia and North America. While the mammoth disappeared from their mainland habitat at the end of the Pleistocene 10,000 years ago, an isolated population survived on St Paul Island until 6400 years ago and on Wrangel Island until 4000 years ago.

The beautiful hues of tan, brown and blue that appear in the tusks are a result of thousands of years of mineralization. The exact hues found in a tusk depend upon the mineral deposits that were present in the soil where the mammoth died. Those mineral deposits give each tusk a unique character never duplicated in another set of fossil tusks.
